What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?
The interior is flexible and open with a woodstove and recycled brick hearth through the center of the house. The large two-story brick hearth serves as a thermal mass, moderating temperature swings throughout the day and across the seasons. Supplementing the high-efficiency, low emissions Scan woodstove, heating comes from two Luxaire sealed combustion furnaces (94% AFUE). In the summer, temperatures and mold-producing humidity are kept low with two high-efficiency Luxaire A/C units (15 SEER). All of the HVAC components were carefully sized and are linked to a Honeywell heat recovery ventilator (HRV), providing the house with fresh air all year round.
Bamboo flooring throughout the house provides a sustainable alternative to both old-growth hardwood floors and often toxic carpeting. ENERGY STAR appliances were chosen to conserve water, electricity, and natural gas. A Takagi tankless water heater provides hot water to the low-flow faucets and showerheads throughout the house. The flushing of cold water is reduced through the use of a hot water circulation pump and motion sensors in the bathrooms. There is also a 1,100 gallon rainwater collection system to provide recycled water to the dual-flush toilets and outdoor hose bibbs.
Taken as a whole, the house represents an integrated approach to the design, construction, and operation of a single-family residence.
Low/zero voc finishes, formaldehyde-free insulation throughout the home.
Heat recovery ventilator (HRV) for whole house air exchange and two whole-house electronic air filters. Local bath exhausts were incorporated throughout the house. As stated above, sealed combusion heating and water specifically sized are used.
