What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?
We are totally off the grid. Aside from minimal propane needed to heat and cook, all the energy is supplied by the sun. You will never pay an electric bill again. We used no VOC or very low VOC for any paint we used. We incorporated passive solar heating and cooling into our design. We made rooflines and windows that allow the sun in during the cooler months and shade the south side in the warmer months.
Because the houses are small, they require very little propane to make them toasty, so you’re never cold. One of the greenest things you can do is build small. Once you go small, you'll never go back. :)
Because of our elevation, we are always 10-15 degrees cooler than Albuquerque, so always pleasant in the summer, even when they are cooking in town.
We have our own well, with good, consistent, reliable water. The floors are either tile or bamboo, a durable, beautiful building material that is quickly replenishable.
We heat and cook with propane, but the bills are small, as the houses are small.Property Description
This was the home of our dreams. Though it is small, we built it with convenience, durability, beauty & even storage space in mind. There are two small buildings. The main one has a kitchen/living room downstairs and a sleeping loft upstairs. The kitchen is small, but as avid cooks, we made it highly functional. From custom made cabinets to bamboo floors to Italian tile on the kitchen counters and backsplash, each detail was carefully considered and built with love.
This building is connected by a walkway to the second small building which has a full bathroom and attached guest or second bedroom. The door can be closed between them, and there is a small wall-mounted propane heater in each room, so that the bedroom doesn’t need to be heated unless necessary.
There is a basement/cellar (not included in the 442sf) that holds the pressure tank & water heater, a workshop and storage space.
There is an outdoor shower, and even an outdoor tub, as well as the full indoor bathroom. Contact person is Edna Worf, our Real Estate Agent
Neighborhood Description
House sits on private 3 acre wooded lot with pinons, junipers, ponderosa pines, wildflowers and grasses, with no houses bordering the property. Power and telephone lines are available for hook up if required, though we never did. We were fine with cell phones. Amazing views of the Manzano and Sandia Mountains and the starry skies through the clear mountain air.
Most neighbors can’t be seen from the house, but have been in the area for decades and are friendly, supportive, private, and quiet. There is abundant wildlife and quiet wilderness, yet you are half an hour from anything a major city has to offer.Market Area
