What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?
The original house (Phase 1, if we can call it that…) was constructed of logs felled on the site and from lumber harvested and milled locally. Recycled materials were used almost exclusively — even down to the concrete forms, which were disassembled and re-used in the roof and floors. The addition (Phase 2) is a more conventional stick-built structure, but built to a very high energy-efficiency standard. The house faces directly south and has lots of windows, so the solar gain is considerable. We've not installed any photovoltaics, but the huge expanse of south-facing roof would make doing that a piece of cake. For 35 years we've heated primarily with wood harvested right here on our lot, which is mostly mixed hardwood.Property Description
This house is one of those rare places that people take one look at and say, "Wow!" Without exception. From the extraordinary roof lines to the massive stone fireplace in the living room to the sauna and heated pool in the basement, it beguiles everyone who steps through the door. There's also a cozy enclosed porch, a covered deck, a walk-out basement, a workshop, and amazing amounts of storage space.
Outside there's a large organic garden, a small orchard, raspberries & blueberries, a little pond, 800 feet of frontage on a year-round stream, lots of perennial flower beds, and 18 beautiful acres of forested land.

Neighborhood Description
This is a very private place. The house sits 2,000 feet back from the main road and the nearest neighbor in that direction is about half a mile away. As the crow flies, the closest neighbor is actually about a quarter mile off through the woods. Except for the peepers in the spring and the occasional hooting of a barred owl, things are pretty quiet around here.Market Area
Wellington is a tiny town of only about 300 souls with no industry. There are a few artists, a couple of dairy farms and some occasional wood harvesting, but that's about it. The town of Harmony (nine miles down the road) is the nearest place to get a jug of milk. When we need a dose of "urban" lifestyle we head to Waterville (home of Colby College) or to Bangor. Both are about an hour away. Economists would probably describe the area as "depressed" but I look around at the folks I've known for years and see people who know how to get by and don't need a lot. No-nonsense make-do kind of folks.School District
MSAD #4 (Guilford) is a small rural district, but highly regarded state-wide for their technology initiatives.Community
