I don't have kids and never really investigated, but the local elementary school is considered to be one of the best in the city of New Haven.

Community

Friendly and well-established. Recently, many older houses in the area have been "fixed up". Good mix of rental houses and owner-occupied houses. VERY friendly neighbors on a first-name basis. I've actually helped many people in my neighbor to go solar!
