A back-up generator is used rarely. • Thick stones walls and floors for heat and cool sinks • Tulikivi woodstove with abundant firewood on property • Super energy efficient kitchen • Extended roofs and gables for weather protection and shading, energy efficient windows and doors • Siting for natural cooling which takes advantage of the local elements • Most of the wood used in construction was milled on site • Well on a 12V solar pump with a 1350 gal. holding tank and gravity feed to the house • Vegetable sink and Japanese soaking tub drain to grey water • Entire 20 acres thinned to Ag Dept. specs for forest health and fire prevention • Water heating coils in kitchen wood stove

Property Description

Hand-crafted by an artist, this open plan home revolves around a massive Finnish Tulikivi wood stove, made entirely of soapstone( including the wraparound benches). The heat produced by one fire can radiate for as long as 24 hours and spreads so evenly throughout the house that the grand piano stands nearby. The entryway serves as a transition from outside to inside with thick stone floors and a wall sized window that frames the full mountain view behind a bank of indoor plants. High vaulted ceilings(tongue and groove pine), and large custom solid cedar windows create a sense of spaciousness as you move through the open living areas furnished with custom built-ins and carefully concealed storage space. There are two major seating areas: one with 180 degree views of the Marble Mountains for summer, and a more protected area closer to the Tulikivi stove for winter. Both convert to sleeping areas. 8’ wide French doors on the south wall of the piano area provide a stone floor heat- sink in the winter and a totally open wall to the mountains in the summer. All floors in these areas are either stone or blued-pine, both 2” thick. An 18” high Japanese floor(8.5x17’-2’thick blued- pine) faces the fire door of the Tulikivi, providing ample seating and transitioning to the bedroom area and the Japanese soaking tub, where you can sit in hot water up to your neck while enjoying the fire. A custom built Tansu(step cabinet), takes you up to a small loft above the office, and out onto a 5x16’ exterior 2nd story deck with forest views and Mt. Shasta in the distance. The deck is tiled for fire safety. The small office under the loft (desk, computer, land-line phone, and storage) enjoys the same views. The full bath has pebble tile, cork flooring, a unique tree stump sink arrangement and a spectacular view of the Marbles. The kitchen is carefully designed with one sink plumbed to the septic for dishes, and another (w/concrete countertop) for washing produce, going to grey water. A cold storage room provides refrigeration during all but the coldest months and houses a 12V DC fridge running straight off the battery bank. A Vermont Castings woodstove, backed by thick stone walls, is plumbed into a propane water heater outside of the kitchen, providing hot water in all but the warmest months, when propane is used. The cook top is also propane and there is no conventional oven--the Tulikivi cooks food perfectly in the cool months, replaced by a solar oven during the summer. The kitchen opens into the energy room(with battery bank, inverter, charge controller, etc.), and outside to a 10x10’ root cellar dug into the embankment, which keeps an even 40 degree temperature all winter. An exterior door at the other end of the kitchen opens through a large covered area to the garden. All entrances to the house are protected by deep roof extensions and the exteriors are clad with either cedar siding or 8 to 10 inches of hand placed fieldstone. The 2 vehicle garage/workshop is of pole/stick construction (20x20’), with a second story accessed by staircase. It is wired into the 120V AC system, and also houses the back-up generator. There is an additional small out building in the wood storage area. Additional photos on Zillow.
