Sustainable Living at its finest. 8 raised garden beds. Small orchard/food forest. 24x24' Roof top garden. Straw/Clay Greenhouse. Cordwood sauna. And great neighbors makes this a resilient place to live.
Earth heated/cooled, Passive Solar, Wood (and natural gas backup) heat from a Masonry Stove. But mostly, we can grow much of our own food and process it. So much carbon is saved by not importing food from the Lower 48.
This is Alaska's only Bioshelter, a house that can recycle its water and waste. It collects rain water and recycles it back into the wetlands and the fish pond. If the fish die, we've used the wrong shampoo. It is built into the side of a mountain so we heat from 38 degrees (ground temp) to the temperature outside, not from colder than that like other homes do. Our windows are only on the south side of the home which features our unheated 42x12ft. solarium. The Solarium not only captures heat from the sun, it also captures the heat from the home's windows. The solarium never freezes and plants grow all winter leaving you with a green view in the foreground and majestic snow covered mountain peaks in the background. It won a national energy award back in the 80s.
We added a well and a septic system (although they are optional to use) so that we could be a conforming house. We love our homemade composting toilet and spread the worm castings from the toilet in the orchard. We have added a clay/straw greenhouse and a cordwood sauna, both built from natural clay dug out of the mountains near Denali National Park.
Our garage roof was converted to a garden and there are 8 raised beds behind the garage on the ground for root veggies.
We've had hundreds of people come for workshops and tours on the property. We converted a shed to an intern cabin, so Wwoofers can come and help out.
This property is in the Chugach State Park and there's wildlife a plenty!
The home is situated about 1100' above sea level in the Eagle River Glacier Valley in the Chugach State Park. There is an unobstructed view of the mountains from most of the rooms in the home. Although each lot is about 2 acres, this neighborhood is fairly close knit. We have neighborhood get togethers and have 3 Facebook Groups to join: animals, sharing, chatting.
Eagle River is 15-20 minutes away by car. Anchorage is 25 miles away (about 40 minutes). Eagle River Road is well maintained.
We have a great school district and also the most diverse school district in the nation.
Many of our neighbors want to live back in the valley to be alone, the other half enjoy getting together and having potlucks and talent shows.
