What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

home is carefully and thoroughly insulated and sealed, pellet stove can heat whole house, double-pane vinyl windows, insulating (honeycomb) shades on windows, solar electric (4 panels only), solar hot water (2 panels) with on-demand gas back-up, 2 water barrels for water collection, large garden, storm doors back and front. In the summer, I create a sensation of air conditioning, at least at the start of heat waves, by opening widows at night, closing during the day, using insulating blinds. By 2PM there is often a 15-degree differential inside/out. I pre-rinse dishes, flush toilets, water inside plants and the garden with harvested rain and gray waste water. We use the oil-fired boiler sparingly. There is a new (2013) oil tank and line to boiler; the boiler itself will soon need replacing.

Property Description

Single family with large side yard, currently in fully productive garden beds. House features new 30-year roof and exterior paint (2014). Storage shed in back.

Neighborhood Description

South Elmwood is one of the most crime-free neighborhoods in Providence. We have a Neighborhood Association and on Hamlin St. one of the funnest block parties in the city (ask the Mayor!). Roger Williams Park is just a 2-minute walk from the house (over a foot/bike only bridge). Both route 10 and route 95 are a 2-minute drive from the house.

Market Area

Providence has become a destination! I've lived here for 41 years and it has blossomed. I love both the city and my house (I've lived here for 14 years), but we're moving to a farm! Rhode Island is a national leader in developing a local food system. A large, cooperative grocery will be opening next year.

School District

Schools are typical mid-size city schools. Lots of places of innovation, however.

Community

Providence, and Rhode Island in general, is the rare kind of city/state where you "get to know everyone" over time. There are many fewer "degrees of separation" here than in, say, Boston, where I've also lived. This gives the place a community feel. My South Elmwood neighborhood has an active neighborhood association, people testify that they like the neighborhood a lot. We have clean-ups, yard sales, meetings, parties. Good!
