What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

In 2012 we put on a 2kw grid tied solar system, on demand hot water, and insulated the solid stone laid foundation with eco-foam. All no-VOC finishes and clay paints were used in the restoration.

Property Description

Our house has been lovingly restored over the past century and a quarter by it's lucky inhabitants, each upgrading the farmhouse for utility and efficiency, but always keeping the character and warmth intact. The house has an open feeling to it, but consists of 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, a dinning room, a kitchen with a beautiful antique slate sink, garland commercial range and an energy efficient fridge, a small library room, and a large three season barn/ workshop space connected to the house. There are two chimneys and three woodstoves, including a central wood fired furnace in the basement. The property also conveys a cottage tucked in the woods but right off the drive, with electricity and a propane connection.

Neighborhood Description

The property for sale conveys the immediate 2 acres on which it sits (including the house/ cottage/ gardens), and also includes co-ownership of 161 acres of common land. Buying the property assures ownership of common property on common land... this includes no-till organic gardens, orchard, greenhouse, outdoor processing kitchen, solar systems, solar / gravity irrigation system to gardens, and tools (everything from shovels to grainmills and a hand powered cider press).

Market Area

The property is at the end of a dirt road which is maintained by the town. It has the feeling of a world apart, yet is a 15 min drive from downtown Belfast, a fast growing eco-friendly town on the Penobscot bay.

School District

I don't have children, but I understand that there are many wonderful options for schools in the area, aside from public school of course. There is the mill school up in the restored gristmill in Freedom, and in Liberty a new homeschooling collective fast emerging based out of the old cannery building.

Community

The community consists of four households (including the one I am selling). The members are incredibly supportive of land based projects and friendly open minded people happy living at the end of a dirt road. We split annual land taxes on the 'common land' making it incredibly affordable. Everyone is mostly content living separate patterns of co-existence, yet all share a love and dedication to the stewarding of this beautiful land.
