This octagonal straw bale house is passive solar with a solarium on the front three sides facing south. The straw bale walls do not have any vapor barrier so they breathe well and have great indoor air quality. Interior straw walls are plastered with a lime plaster directly onto the bales so they have a very organic look. The exterior straw walls are wrapped with stucco netting and then two coats of cement stucco and a color coat of dryvit, a synthetic material that expands and contracts without cracking! The solarium floor is flag stone and the rest of the house is saltio tile with a small central room of redwood flooring. There is a small cupola at the top of the house that makes for a great lookout on to the glorious Elk Mountains. Mount Crested Butte is perfectly framed out the north windows. All doors and windows have insulated covers which work very well in the winter to retain the heat inside the house. Interior walls are made of locally harvested tongue and groove spruce. There is a very efficient Sunfrost refrigerator/freezer and a Bosch washing machine. All the lights have compact florescent bulbs. Both the bedroom and cupola have lofts. The bathrooms has a very comfortable claw foot bath tub. The septic tank is sized for a three bedroom house. The water is softened with magnetohydrodynamics.
All of the electricity for the house and whole farm come from solar photovoltaic panels (1,438 watts) and a wind generator (500 watts). The electricity is stored in six Rolls 4V-4LS21PS deep cycle batteries in a 12 volt system. On the rare occassion that more electricity is needed there is a EB6,500sx Honda gasoline generator that can be used for power tools or to charge up the battery bank. There is also a solar heating system with evacuated tubes for domestic hot water with an 80-gallon water tank and in-floor heat with a propane NTI boiler backup with on-demnd hot water. There is also a 30 foot yurt, a 2,700 sq ft year-round greenhouse and two straw bale sheds on the property. Please check out the website for the full virtual tour!
To the south there is a 530-acre cattle ranch and to the north there are four 40-acre ranchetts with horses. To the east and west there are subdivisions of 35-acre parcels.
Crested Butte is a small mountain ski town 10 miles north and Gunnison is a larger small mountain town which is home to Western State College and is 20 miles south.
