Given its name by the project’s lead architect, the "Eco-Cape" demonstrates that high-performance energy efficient homes providing the highest standard of indoor air quality are now within the financial reach of the average New Jersey home buyer.
A key element of the Eco-Cape’s ability to maintain indoor air quality is its fully integrated HEPA filtration system. The unit keeps the house free of dust and allergens (99.7% efficient) while simultaneously removing stale air from the house and drawing in fresh air. Installation of a central vacuuming system and use of low-toxicity finishes and adhesives further controls the potential for air contaminants to be released into the home environment.
The energy saving technologies incorporated into the Eco-Cape design include, a high performance thermal envelope, a high efficiency heating and cooling system, and ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, lighting fixtures and appliances. The tankless hot water heater also contributes towards energy conservation by generating hot water instantaneously, thereby eliminating the need to constantly heat and reheat a large storage tank.
Other examples of the Eco-Cape’s environmentally friendly features include its rainwater harvesting and “native plant” landscaping design, its high efficiency water pipes and fixtures, and its sustainable and recycled flooring materials. When completed, the Eco-Cape project achieved 58 LEED points, 8 points higher than required to attain a Gold rating.
