What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?
Green remodeling began in 2002 using many natural materials and low-voc paints and finishes throughout. Energy efficiency features include 3.5 kw solar PV system with grid intertie, solar preheated water, solar heated hot tub, point-of-use/on-demand electric water heaters in kitchen and bathroom, double-pane windows throughout, insulation in ceiling, walls, and under floor, Harmon wood pellet heating stove, and highly efficient utilities in kitchen including inductive magnetic stovetop (Kenmore), refrigerator (Sun Frost) and half-drawer dishwasher (Fisher & Paykel). An electric vehicle charging station with separate meter at front of garage has both 120v and 240v connections. This all-electric house (no gas or electric bills!) retains the original gas hookups for space heating, water heating and cooking. Water saving features: beautiful 5,000-gallon recycled redwood rainwater collection tank, a 1.5 gallon flush toilet inside and a Farallones model composting toilet room outside.Property Description

Arcata is a small university town (pop. 16,000) on California's cool north coast. Located in Humboldt County, just north of Eureka, the county seat. Humboldt State University, like Arcata, is known for its environmental emphasis. The city owns and manages a 793-acre redwood forest with many walking trails near the university. Another local jewel is the Arcata Marsh, a model natural lagoon wastewater treatment system located on Humboldt Bay. The bay is a migration route for many species of birds. The heart of the city is the Arcata Plaza, the location of an awesome Saturday morning farmers market held April through November, as well as periodic festivals including the zany Memorial Day weekend Kinetic Sculpture Race. There are many organic farms and gardens in Arcata and surrounding area. At least four CSAs are located here including an organic grain-growing farm. In June 2002, the City of Arcata enacted an ordinance capping the number of chain restaurants in the city to nine. A small airport is located about 10 miles north offering direct flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and points east and north. An Amtrak bus and Greyhound bus also provide transportation to the Bay Area.School District
