SUMMER The house remains cool during the summer months because it is built into the hill on the north side. Also, the south facing windows are shaded from the high summer sun with 4 foot overhangs. The house lives very comfortably.
WINTER The house is oriented south to capture the long winter sunlight. Tile flooring absorbs the warmth from the sun and rigid foam insulation beneath directs the heat back into the living space, moderating inside temperatures. The wood stove is used for back-up heat on very cloudy days and the split-face block behind the stove is filled with sand to create another heat storage. The wall emanates heat long after the fire goes out. Approximately ½ to 2/3 cord of wood is needed during the winter to keep the house at 70 degrees.
